Ambrose Jearld, Jr. Lecture

The Ambrose Jearld, Jr. Lecture is given every summer in Woods Hole by invited scholars, scientists, authors and others who can challenge the status quo to bring perspective, knowledge and expertise to the subject of building a more diverse and inclusive community.

Jearld devoted much of his career to fostering NOAA's goal of maintaining a workplace in which all people are respected as individuals and valued for their contributions. His work with NOAA, higher education institutions (especially Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other Minority Serving Institutions) has helped make oceanography and marine biology more accessible to a diverse body of students and research faculty.

Community Discussions

The DAC Community Diversity Discussion Series aims to increase awareness within both the scientific and broader community structures of issues preventing inclusion and diversity in the Woods Hole, Falmouth and Cape Cod region. As such, the Discussion Series serves as a primary method of 1) increasing transparency and communication between the DI, DAC, and stakeholders interested in improving diversity and inclusion in the community; 2) providing opportunities for networking and capacity building among individuals interested in taking action to improve diversity and inclusion; and 3) creating an atmosphere of tolerance through broader community discussions and help build connections toward solutions to those issues.

John K. Bullard Diversity Award

The John K. Bullard Award was established by the WHDI when John stepped down from SEA leadership. A plaque in his honor is on display at SEA. In June the 2014 winner's name will be added to the plaque, which will then move to the institution most closely associated with the most recent winner of the Bullard Award.

Juneteenth

The DAC is dedicated to celebrating and educating the Woods Hole community and the community at large about the history of Juneteenth and importance of continuing to celebrate it today. Past events have included speakers and celebrations.

Native American Heritage

Native American Heritage Month is a time to acknowledge, learn, and celebrate the rich ancestry and traditions of Native American Nations. The DAC helps celebrate and educate the Woods Hole science community and the community at large about Native American history and culture. The DAC is responsible for planning and putting on events during the month of November. Past events have included panel discussions and book clubs.

Hispanic Heritage Month

The DAC recognize the achievements and contributions of the Hispanic/Latinx community both in science and to the global world. We are hosting a series of events to share and acknowledge the rich cultural and social traditions of the Hispanic community.  The DAC is responsible for planning and putting on events annually during the fall between September 15 and October 15.
